Sell Your Business

with

Confidence and Clarity

Today (April 22, 2025):

Navigating the Uncertainty:

  • Managing Tariffs

  • Their Effect on Valuations

  • Stoicisim

Tariffs are on... off... on... off... on... off... uncertain.

There are several programs available to help you deal with Tariff uncertainty.

Here are a few worth looking into:

1) "Pivot to Grow Loan" from the BDC - Borrow up to $2m at below market rates, if your business has over $2M in Revenue, is profitable and over 25% of sales is exports to the US.

2) Jason Guidry of the Halifax Partnership is creating a list of companies that would like to do business with the UK.

3) The Nova Scotia Loyal Producer Labelling Program from Invest NS, provides financial assistance for producers to purchase labelling products and services, including graphic design to incorporate the Nova Scotia Loyal logo.

How might this uncertainty impact the sale of my business?

The Market treats uncertainty as Risk.  When a business faces increased risk, its valuation tends to decrease. However, there are several factors that could potentially improve this scenario.

For instance, many financial analysts anticipate that the Bank of Canada will reduce interest rates this year. This reduction would lower the financial burden on your buyer post-purchase, potentially allowing them to offer a higher price for your business.

Additionally, some business owners are now shifting their focus and exploring new markets. If your business is less impacted by tariffs, it could become an appealing option for an acquirer seeking to diversify their portfolio.

While the landscape is indeed shifting, it's important to note that not all changes are negative. Feel free to reach out to us if you would like to discuss this further.

As an Entrepreneur you manage risk and market shifts daily, but...

If you are struggling to make sense of the world right now, (and who isn't); I have two recommendations:

1) Follow Ryan Holiday "The Daily Stoic" - it's probably not what you think and I find it both comforting and humbling to know that philosophers and leaders over 2000 years ago faced many of the same issues we do today.  I find their wisdom and advice helpful everyday.

2) Who is the smartest person on the planet today? It might be Yuval Noah Harrari. His new book "Nexus" is a must read.

Or you can listen to it on a walk or long drive like I did:

  • Made with Local - delicious snack bars from Windsor, NS

  • Snair's Bread from Sussex, NB

  • Tony's Meats and Mr. Donair from Antigonish, NS

Help me add to this list.  What do you recommend?
